Shopping at the Old Port Area

Yesterday we felt adventurous and drove through town over to the "Old Port". This is where the fishing boats are berthed and the fish markets are located. There are also many restaurants and shops. A large plaza is located at the east end. Debbie walking next to a statue.

The statue is of a fisherman riding a shrimp and is in the center of the plaza.

I took this picture of the only "on the water" restaurant as we walked down to the shops, to the right is our campground "Playa Bonita"

While we walking along the shops a pickup truck full of Mexican Army guys, I guess, stopped in the middle of the road right next to us. It was some what alarming to see these guys with a .50 caliber machine gun with a belt of bullets hanging down. Some of them bailed off the truck but a few stayed on and those in the cab remained. I noticed two of them remained at the machine gun and one always had a hand on the gun. I took a quick picture and then Debbie and I ducked into a shop. The shop keeper said they were just picking up fish at one of the markets. Whew!! But I noticed he seem a little nervous and kept glancing over at them. I wondered if his explanation of their stopping was accurate or wishful thinking. We don't see sights like this. The closest we can come at home is the firemen stopping at the super market with their fire truck.

They blocked traffic for sometime but we have found the Mexican people are extremely polite and they all waited patiently, nobody used their horn, and the soldiers finally left. We bargained with some of the shopkeepers for a few items. And bought three pounds of shrimp for $20.
