We drove up to Hoodsport and Helene and Jim’s cabin. It turned out to be a beautiful house in the middle of a green forest about a ten minute drive from Hoodsport. After a tour of the house and catching up they decided we needed to go visit the Mountain Man.
On the way we were informed he owns the whole mountain we were now driving around the base of, as well as the tidal area of the adjoining Hood Canal. He has retired from a career as a bush pilot in Alaska. He also has at least one gold claim. He purchased the land and commuted back a forth for a while.
Shortly we started up a steep dirt road that serpentine’d several miles up the mountain. He cut the road and maintains it himself with his bulldozer. He also built his log cabin. Finally we arrived near the top at the end of a long landing strip he used during the time he commuted to Alaska. We continued along the landing strip passing a small Stearman airplane tucked into a small hanger . There were a couple of pontoons stored next to the plane. In a few moment we made a turn and in the clearing was a two story log cabin. What a gorgeous setting. We interrupted a roof cleaning session and were heartily welcomed by Yukon, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Above Jim and Helene are on the lawn at the back of the house.
Yukon, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, is lying on the lawn at the other end of the cabin with a toy between his front legs.
From the front lawn there are views of the Hood Canal to the west and mountain views to the east. The Canal appears to be several miles wide at this point. Note the large picture windows.

The mountain view is obscured by clouds.
Next, the inside of the log cabin.
